Way back in (checks watch) 2020 (yikes!), we were working on one of the first prototypes of Arkheron. We had a really busy week; a ton of stuff was coming into the game. We were aiming for this end of week play test, but I was really worried.
There were so many changes happening, and we hadn’t really had a chance to test, and I was convinced the play test was going to be a disaster. I kept having these thoughts run through my mind: “Why are we doing this? Everyone will crash. This isn’t going to work..”
Still, we put together a build, and sent it out to everyone, and we all logged in.. I was giving it a 50/50 chance of us all just crashing on startup.. but…
It worked (well, at least it didn’t crash
)!
I remember this because I sent a slack message to the game director (and I took a screenshot so I would always remember):
The funny thing – you can see those lost 20 minutes – not only did the game work, but – it was magical! I spent 20 minutes using the earth bracers I’d picked up to defeat all the other engineers. Pretty sure I got some artists and designers in there too.
That old build would not be recognizable as Arkheron today. Our models and gameplay were all super janky.. but the heart of it was there. I had this feeling we had made something special.
It’s been a long journey, but I’m so glad that we finally get to share Arkheron with y’all!
thx,
sam
